JD -7 Mine - Drainage Design Plan 17 <br />3. HYDROLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SITE SOILS <br />Two major soil types occur at the JD -7 Mine project site. The dominant soils within the JD -7 DOE lease <br />boundary are the Bodot and Ustic Torriorthents soils, which are shown as Unit 23 on Map 5 of the <br />Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) (Whetstone Associates, 2012). These thin soils occur on steeper <br />areas of pinyon juniper woodlands in the vicinity of the open pit and underground mine and are classified <br />as fine, montmorillonitic, calcareous, mesic Ustic Torriorthents. The dominant soil types on the valley <br />floor are the Mikim Loam and Paradox Loam which are shown as Units 56 and 73 on Map 5 of the EPP. <br />These thicker soils occur in the area of the existing and proposed open pit waste rock pile and topsoil <br />stockpile, and are classified as fine- loamy, mixed (calcareous), mesic Ustic Torriorthents. <br />The site soils are mapped as Hydrologic Soil Group B and C (Table 7). The steeper areas on the <br />escarpment of Monogram Mesa exhibit predominantly type C characteristics while the lower, flatter areas <br />on the valley floor exhibit predominantly type B properties. Group B and C soils are defined by the NRCS <br />(2012) as: <br />Group B. Soils having a moderate infiltration rate when thoroughly wetted and consist <br />chiefly of moderately deep to deep, moderately well to well drained soils with moderately <br />fine to moderately coarse textures. These soils have a moderate rate of water transmission. <br />Group C. Soils having a slow infiltration rate when thoroughly wet. These consist chiefly <br />of soils having a layer that impedes the downward movement of water or soils of <br />moderately fine texture or fine texture. These soils have a slow rate of water transmission. <br />Table 7. A <br />curve number of 73 was applied for pinyon juniper with grass understory, in fair condition (30 -70% <br />vegetative cover) and group C soils (Table 8). A curve number of 61 was applied for pinyon juniper with <br />grass understory, in good condition ( >70% vegetative cover) and group C soils (Table 8). A curve number <br />of 89 was applied to areas occupied by the major gravel access roads, including County Road EE17. A <br />curve number of 85 was applied to the disturbed ground in the mine facilities area and to the existing <br />underground - waste -rock pile. Areas with historical disturbance over which vegetation has regrown were <br />assigned curve numbers of 63 or 80, corresponding to sagebrush with grass understory in fair or poor <br />condition, respectively.
