1.2 Precipitation
Table P and the associated charts exhibit the seasonal precipitation that has occurred near the mine
in Palisade, Colorado over the past 11 years. The overall average annual precipitation for the past 103
years is 9.88 inches. The seasonal precipitation ranges from a winter total of 1.68 inches while spring,
summer, and fall averages are 2.80, 2.26, and 3.14 inches, respectively (Charts P1 and P2). Review of
Table P further reveals that seasonal precipitation in the past 13 years has been variable, ranging from
0.53 inches to 6.47 inches, with the higher values consistently occurring in the fall.
Chart P2 indicates that precipitation for the 2012/2013 growing season was below average at 810/0
of normal. Summer and fall precipitation prior to the 2013 sampling effort was considerably below
average (54% and 56% of normal, respectively). However, the precipitation received in the winter
months was well above average at 143 %. Spring moisture is essential for the health and vigor of cool
season plants. Spring precipitation just prior to sampling in 2013 was at near normal levels with 94% of
average precipitation. Collected data in 2013 are reflective of slightly below- average vigor for perennial
vegetation in addition to low cheatgrass levels on both the reclamation areas and the Shadscale
Reference Area.
CEDAR CREEK ASSOCIATES, Inc.
