SOP for Surface Water Sampling — Hansen Project 3
Figure 1. Sample collection from a Small Stream using a Swing Sampler
3.2 Equipment Decontamination
Before and between samples, all sample collection equipment will be decontaminated. If dedicated equipment
is used, it will be rinsed with distilled or deionized water. Mobile decontamination supplies will be provided so
that equipment can be decontaminated in the field. The decontamination solutions shall be replaced with clean
solutions between each decontamination operation (i.e., between each sample location). Used solutions will be
placed in a container for disposal as specified in the QAPP. A discussion of equipment decontamination is
contained in Appendix B of the Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring Plan.
3.3 Instrument Calibration
Electronic equipment used during sampling includes pH, temperature, ORP, DO, and specific conductance
measuring instruments. Before going into the field, the sampler must verify that all instruments are operating
properly. Most pH meters require frequent calibration and must be calibrated in the field before use at each
sampling station. The conductivity meter should be calibrated in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommended schedule. The DO meter must be calibrated at each monitoring station, immediately before use.
The ORP meter is factory calibrated and tested by EcoSense® and does not require specific calibration.
Calibration time and appropriate readings will be recorded in the fieldbook. Calibrations should be performed
according to instrument operations manuals and SOPS for Instrument Calibration (Appendix A).
3.4 Obtaining Water Samples - Small Streams
The following procedures are to be used to collect surface water samples in streams less than three to five feet
wide and one foot deep.
1. Assemble all necessary sample collection and filtering equipment.
2. Fill out sample labels for the sampling location, with all information except sample time. Set aside the
sample bottles designated for filtration. Assemble remaining bottles for filling.
3. Don clean latex gloves.
4. Measure and record field parameters. DO can be measured in -situ by suspending the DO probe in the
flowing stream. Depending on the instruments used, temperature, pH, and conductivity may be
4153A.140129 Whetstone Associates
