SOP for Surface Water Sampling — Hansen Project 1
1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to define the standard procedure for collecting surface water samples for water
quality analysis. This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) serves as a supplement to the Quality Assurance
Project Plan (QAPP) prepared for the Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring Plan. This procedure gives descriptions
of equipment, field procedures, and Quality Assurance /Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures necessary to
collect surface water samples. The sample locations and frequency of collection are specified in the Baseline
Hydrologic Monitoring Plan.
2. EQUIPMENT
Certified clean sample bottles will be obtained from the analytical laboratory. Several extra sample bottles will
be obtained in case of breakage or other problems.
Equipment used during surface water sample collection:
• Swing sampler and pole
• pH meter (with automatic temperature compensation)
• Specific conductance meter
• Thermometer (or combined T /pH/SC meter)
• Dissolved oxygen (DO) meter
• Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) meter
• Decontaminated, 1 -liter polyethylene bottle for sample collection and filtering
• Sample bottles, labels, and preservatives
• Plastic squeeze or spray bottle filled with deionized or distilled water
• Cooler with ice
• Chain of custody (COC) forms, surface water field sampling data sheets, and custody seals
• Pocket calculator
• Fieldbook and (optional) field sampling forms
• Appropriate health and safety equipment (personal protective equipment)
Equipment used during sample filtration:
• Disposable 0.45 micron filters (1 per sample)
• Tygon (or other flexible, laboratory- grade) tubing (approx. 18 inches per sample)
• Electric peristaltic pump or electric drill powered pump
Equipment used during decontamination:
• Liquinox® or Alconox® soap (or equivalent)
• Potable tap water
• Deoonized or distilled water
• Large sponges
• Decontamination buckets /pails
• Several "spray" or "squirt" bottles
4153A.140129 Whetstone Associates
