SOP for Decontamination of Field Sampling Equipment — Hansen Project 3
consecutively numbered pages. The information entered in the fieldbook concerning decontamination should
include the following:
• Decontamination personnel
• Date and start and end times
• Type of detergents and type or source of water used in decontamination
• Disposal of spent wash and rinse solutions
• Decontamination methods and observations
• Weather conditions (for onsite decontamination only)
Documentation of offsite decontamination is not required, other than to note in the field book that clean,
decontaminated equipment was used during sample collection.
6. DISCUSSION
The overall objective of the sampling programs is to obtain samples which accurately depict the chemical,
physical, and/or biological conditions at the sampling site. Extraneous contaminant materials can be brought
onto the sampling location and/or introduced into the medium of interest during the sampling program (e.g., by
bailing or pumping of groundwater with equipment previously contaminated at another sampling site). Trace
quantities of these contaminant materials can thus be captured in a sample and lead to false positive analytical
results and, ultimately, to an incorrect assessment of the contaminant conditions associated with the site.
Decontamination of sampling equipment (e.g., bailers, pumps, and tubing) and field support equipment (e.g.
vehicles and personal protective equipment) is therefore required to ensure that sampling cross - contamination
is prevented, and that on -site contaminants are not carried off -site.
4153A.140129 Whetstone Associates
