Foliations <br />exhibited a strike of approximately 5 degrees with dips of approximately 10 <br />degrees. The spacing between of the foliation varied, but was typically very close <br />to wide. The persistence of the foliation was also widely variable, but ranged from <br />medium to high. Apertures of the foliation were very moderately open to tight with <br />slightly rough to rough surfaces and were moderately to slightly weathered. <br />Small blocks may form in this area due to the orientation of the highwall and joint sets of the <br />rock. In addition, due to the fractured nature of the rock and highwall weathering, raveling of <br />small to medium sized rocks can also be expected. These rocks resulting from block <br />formation and raveling are anticipated to be limited in size, and should be retained on the <br />bench below the highwall and only cause local operational delays. <br />Sta. 1 +40 to 2 +15 consisted of primarily of granitic and biotitic gneiss with minor, <br />localized pegmatite intrusions. At Sta. 1 +40, a 5 foot wide mafic intrusion was <br />visible. Rocks observed within the highwall typically exhibited medium high to <br />high compressive strength (estimated) and very poor quality RQD. Two primary <br />joint sets were evident. The first set exhibited a strike ranging from 350 to 10 <br />degrees with dips ranging from 65 degrees to 80 degrees. The spacing between of <br />these joints varied, but was typically moderate. The persistence of the joints was <br />also widely variable, but ranged from low to medium. Apertures of the joints were <br />moderately open to tight with slightly rough to rough surfaces and were <br />moderately to slightly weathered. The second primary joint set exhibited a strike <br />ranging from 95 degrees to 290 degrees with dips ranging from 80 to 85 degrees. <br />This joint set had similar properties to primary joint set 1— very poor quality RQD, <br />wide to moderately spaced joints, low to medium persistence, moderately open to <br />tight joint apertures, and slightly rough to rough rock surfaces, and moderate to <br />slight weathering.
