Hickenfooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Loretta E. Pifteda
Director
Permit and Disturbed Area acreages for the Carbon Junction Mine have not been regularly
tracked and updated in the Permit System. For this mine, the issue is made more complex by the
presence of the adjacent Ewing Mesa Pit No. 1, a sand and gravel operation assigned permit
number M -1992 -116. The mines have overlapped in the past, and areas have been transferred
from one mine to the other.
Effective as of today's date, acreages in the Permit System have been updated to accurately
reflect the best information available, as shown here.
Table 1— Acreages for Permit System
Category
Current Value
Updated Value
Disturbed Acreage
134.51
61.83
Actual Disturbed
0.00
61.83
Affected Acreage
134.51
61.83
Actual Affected
0.00
61.83
Life of Mine Acreage
161.79
61.83
Permit Acreage
164.19
164.34
Surface Acreage (Private)
164.19
164,34
Mineral Ownership (Private)
164.19
164.34
The Carbon Junction Mine (C -1982 -054) was re- permitted in 1993 under Permit Number C-
1992-080. With issuance of the current permit, an area of 248.39 acres was approved. This
original area included 34.5 acres for the proposed gravel pit operation. Coal disturbances were
determined to be 73.5 acres for the pit and fill area and 30.75 acres for the multiple use gravel
and coal equipment and storage facilities area (a total of 104.25 acres disturbed). My rationale
for the "Updated" acreages is provided in the sections that follow.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
