Outfalls 001 and 002 flowed at least once during the third quarter of 1986 (no TDS values
were present). Second quarter 1986 DMR's indicate th at flow was present at both outfalls
for at least one week (TDS at 001 w as 978 mg/1; TDS at 002 was 5,188 mg/1). During the
first quarter 1986, flow was present at both outfalls for at least two weeks (TDS values:
001 average = 974 mg/1, 001 maximum = 1,280 mg/1; 002 average = 4,232 mg/1 and 002 maximum
= 4,692 mg/1).
Both outfalls generally flow only as a result of snowmelt runoff. Outfall 001 will flow
if the winter snowpack is average or above. Outfall 002 will flow only if winter snowpack
is above average (1986). TDS values at Outfall 002 are higher than Outfall 001 possibly
due to coal leachate, but most probably due to a larger basin discharge area in which high
concentrations of naturally occurring salts are present in the topsoil and alluvium.
Hydrologic Structures and Water Rights
Locations of hydrologic structures (i.e., water supply intakes, ditches, and reservoirs)
and water rights in the vicinity of the permit area are shown on the map contained in
Attachment 14-1. water rights are listed in Attachment 14-1.
An industrial use well (Shallow Well No. 1, Permit 24576-F) was permitted with the
Colorado Division of Water Resources by H-G Coal Company, the previous owner/operator, in
December 1979. The well is a water supply well completed in the shallow alluvium. it is
a replacement well for Well 22772-F, which was abandoned in either 1979 or 1980. Well
permit and completion forms, which were copied from the Division of Water Resources files,
are presented in Attachment 7-5, Shallow Well No. 1 Well Information.
A list of groundwater wells within one mile of the permit boundary is presented in
Appendix 7-3, Groundwater Wells in the Vicinity of the Permit Area. The list was
generated from data on file with the Colorado Division of Water Resources. Exhibit 7-1,
Groundwater Wells in the Vicinity of the Loadout Permit Area, is a map that shows the
locations of the nearby groundwater wells.
Wells HGDALI and HGDAL2 were abandoned by HGTI in September, 2007. As noted above, Well
22772-F was abandoned in either 1979 or 1980 by H-G Coal Company, the previous
owner/operator. Abandonment documentation is found in Appendix 7-4, Groundwater Well
Abandonment Reports.
MR-16 31 Revised 11/07
