Portal #5 is a new portal which is an access into a higher portion of the marble deposit. This access is to
be 30 feet wide x 16 feet high, driven directly into the marble face. This portal was applied for in TR -1
of April 2012.
The area of Portal #5 and Portal #6 is solid marble with very little cracks. Existing rooms in the lower
portals are wide expanses which in some cases exceed 120 feet. See picture below.
Picture 3- Integrity of marble in existing workings of the mine. These portals will have dimensions of
30 feet wide x 16 feet high until a cover of at least 150 feet is attained. Only at that time can the
dimensions of the mine tunnel expand. This is to ensure that no subsidence or unsafe conditions could
exist at the portal area or inside the mine. Once a cover of 150 feet is attained, the marble is strong
enough that wider entries and mining of actual marble blocks can occur. It is worthwhile to note that the
mountain above the portal is so steep that a cover of 150 feet is attained very rapidly.
Yule Quarry January 2014 20
