Hickenlooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Loretta Pineda
Director
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety ( CDRMS) received Seneca Coal Company's
4th Quarter 2013 Sediment Pond Inspection Report on December 12, 2013.The submittal includes
inspection reports for sediment ponds 005, 006, 009, 015, 016, and 017. Sediment ponds were inspected
on November 7, and 8, 2013. The Division finds the above reference report to be in compliance with
the following CDRMS regulation.
4.05.9(17) — Examined at least quarterly by a qualified person designated by the operator, for
appearance of structural weakness and other hazardous conditions.
4.05.9(17) — A copy of the report shall be submitted to the Division on a quarterly basis.
No maintenance items were conducted nor were concerns identified, and all sediment ponds were
functioning as designed at the time of the inspection. Sediment pond 005, 006 and 017 were observed to
have damp areas below the toe of the embankment. The reports did not indicate that this observation
posed a concern. Ponds 015 and 016 have previously experienced surrounding land instability
previously. The December 2013 reports noted that the previously identified landslides appeared stable.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me (303) 866 -3567 ext. 8107.
Sincerely,
Janet Binns
Environmental Protection Specialist III
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
