Coal Loadout Reference Area. As with the refuse disposal site, the coal
loadout site is located entirely within the Grassland vegetation type and
was entirely disturbed prior to the initial vegetation inventory conducted
in 1980. A vegetation reference area for the coal loadout was selected
based upon similarities to the loadout area and the fact that it had not
been previously disturbed. The reference area for the coal loadout is
located on the east side of the coal loadout site.
Total basal cover within this area was 19.35 percent at the time sampling
was conducted and was dominated by grasses with a basal grass cover of
9.01 percent, followed by forbs with a basal forb cover of 5.04 percent.
Sample adequacy was calculated to be 18 samples and 18 samples were
collected for the site. Refer to Exhibit 11, Vegetation Inventory for
detailed descriptions and information regarding this reference area.
Threatened and Endangered Species
In 1980, when the original vegetation inventory was conducted at the site,
a comprehensive vascular plant inventory was performed. A total of 130
species were identified within the mine and loadout areas. They included
6 tree species, 22 shrub or sub -shrub species, 73 forbs and 29 graminoids.
None of the species identified were listed on the Federal Threatened or
Endangered Species list in 1980.
Potential Forage Production and Range Condition
During 1979 and 1980, the Soil Conservation Service in Canon City,
Colorado conducted preliminary vegetation surveys within the Southfield
mine area. These surveys are included within Exhibit 11, Vegetation
Inventory. These preliminary vegetation surveys indicated that range
TR -39 2.04.10 -5b Revised Nov 2013
