Notes for site visit November 27, 2013:
Bowie had received over 0.91" of rain /snow mix the weekend of
November 22 -24 with freezing, or close to freezing conditions. The
site was still very wet upon my arrival.
Our first stop was gob pile #2. The top of the pile is still being worked
and compacted. The end dumped material pile has decreased in size,
but there is still a lot to do before getting it fully compacted and
graded before the real winter months begin. Dan Quigley and I spoke
to Marcia last week about the forth coming Technical Revision for the
drying area on top of gob pile #2 and the associated stability analysis.
One of the parameters that was discussed and that will be included in
the stability analysis is a 25' minimum offset of the drying area from
the compacted face of the pile. We measured the current
configuration and there is at least 25' between the face and the
drying area.
In the last inspection report, two pipes along the haul road were
mentioned and of concern to DRMS. One pipe, between benches two
and three was removed. The other pipe as shown on the following
page is a 24" and correctly sized. There was another pipe removed
near the top of the gob pile. It was damaged and causing water to
back up. Another temporary pipe will likely be installed at a later
date.
Our next stop was gob pile #3. The gob was fairly wet, but starting to
dry out, and a dozer was starting to work the gob. In an effort to get
the gob dry enough to compact, piles of gob and dirt were stacked
side by side. The dirt is being mixed in with the gob as it is being
compacted. The drying area itself is full of gob, and a ditch will need
to be re -cut along the toe berm to direct drainage to Ditch J3. Salvage
of topsoil has begun between the two coverfill stockpiles. The topsoil
is being stored behind the east coverfill pile.
Pond F is still holding water and sediment, but some dewatering has
occurred. Sediment at the delta has not been removed, there was
not enough time between storms. The pond currently has 4 -5' of
water and sediment. A pump is set up and a pipe is run from Pond F
to the wash plant and water will be pumped back to the wash plant as
necessary.
Pond J is holding about 4 -5' of water and sediment. There are no
immediate plans to dewater Pond J.
At this time, and for the last two weeks, a small percentage of fines
are bypassing the wash plant and being diverted to the clean coal.
When I was leaving the site, a haul truck was leaving the wash plant
and the gob wasn't the wet soupy material that has been coming out
of the wash plant, it was in a pile in the bed of the haul truck.
