( Colowyo) as a nomination
for a 2013 Coal Mining Reclamation Award which honors outstanding reclamation of coal
mines, and seeks to further the collection and dissemination of information about successful
reclamation techniques.
Colowyo once again demonstrated its commitment toward contemporaneous reclamation
in 2013 by reclaiming approximately 172.15 acres mine wide of which 162.6 acres were
reclaimed within the West Pit, and 9.55 acres were reclaimed in the South Taylor Pit
respectively.
Construction of the West Pit Fill has been completed. Beginning in late 2011 and
continuing to date, Colowyo has undertaken regrading a historic area which was comprised of
the original boxcut material of the West Pit. 2013 West Pit Fill final regrade efforts were
completed by primarily utilizing dozers, scrapers, and a trackhoe with a rock hammer.
Approximately 300 feet of rock armored channel was constructed in 2013. Approximately 4.6
million yards of material were moved since 2011 to complete this project. This is a significant
milestone in the history of Colowyo Mine and the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety ( CDRMS).
2013 marked the second step in construction of the West Taylor Fill in the South Taylor
Pit. In addition to final regrade work, approximately 1,200 feet of rock armored channel was
constructed in 2013.
In June 2013, a significant bond release effort was undertaken to reduce Colowyo's
exploratory drilling program Notice of Intent (NOI) bond liability. Through cooperative efforts
involving CDRMS and Colowyo environmental staff, Colowyo's NOI bonds were reduced by
over 95% from approximately $1,265,000 to just under $60,000. This is a reflection of the
diligent and sound reclamation efforts undertaken by Colowyo in years past at the conclusion of
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY /AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EMPLOYER CRAIG STATION ESCALANTE STATION NUCLA STATION
P.O.
