Thus we do <br />understand your desire to establish grassy areas in the reclamation project and agree that these types of <br />areas will benefit wildlife. However the shrub component in this area is a very important part of the <br />habitat. Therefore we feel that an effort should be made to establish some smaller shrub clumps (from <br />one to three acres in size) interspersed throughout the reclaimed area. If seed mixes fail to establish the <br />shrubs, we recommend that an effort be made by using live stem plantings. Also, if wildlife browsing <br />proves to be a limiting factor in establishment of the shrub clumps, we recommend that the clumps be <br />temporarily fenced to allow the plants to become hardy enough to withstand those pressures. <br />We have reviewed the seed mixes that are proposed for reclamation purposes. Due to the grass <br />components being dominant in the proposed change of the reclamation plan we have made some <br />suggestions on additions and deletions to the seed mixtures. The overall objective of these changes is to <br />obtain a native grass mixture which will maximize the palatability and overall quality of the planted <br />species in order to maximize benefits to wildlife. <br />In shrub mix: Add: Sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) <br />In all mixes: Delete: Intermediat Wheatgrass <br />Replace with: Thickspike, Streambank and/or Slender Wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus <br />ssp. Lanceolatus, Elymus lanceolatus psammophilus Sodar and/or Elymustrchycaulus ssp <br />trachycaulus.) <br />Mix 1 & 2: Delete: Yellow Clover <br />Replace with: Any of the optional forbs in seed mix 2 or the forbs in mix 3. <br />Mix 2: Delete: Orchardgrass <br />Replace with: Great Basin Wildrye (Elymus cinereus) <br />DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg E.
