Woody Plant Density: The density of shrubs and trees will be sampled in reclaimed areas.
i Concentrated shrub and tree planting areas will be delineated and sampled separately from the general
reclamation. Values will be presented as stems per 100 sq.m. and stems per acre. No sampling of
woody plant density of reference areas is anticipated, since the standards are not related to reference
area conditions.
Species List: A list of all plant species observed during sampling will be developed Information on
currently used scientific names, common names, as well as scientific synonyms, lifeforms, and origin
(native or introduced) will be included.
Species Density: A measure of the number of species per 100 sq.m. determined at the cover sampling
locations will be made and referred to as "Species Density."
Sampling Methods
Cover: Cover will be measured by the point - intercept method. The point - intercept transect will be 50
meters long with 100 points taken.
Production: Production data will be collected through use of the harvest method. All herbaceous
biomass produced during the current year within a vertical projection of the 0.5 sq.m. sample plot will
be harvested. Clipped material will be dried at 105 degrees C and weighed to the nearest 0.1 gm.
Resulting oven -dry weights will be presented as gm /0.5 sq.m. and lbs /ac.
Woody Plant Density: Woody plants rooted within 2 x 50 meter plots will be named by species.
Clonal species such as mountain snowberry will have nodes of more concentrated stem emergence
counted as individuals as was done during baseline surveys of woody plant density.
Species List: The species list will be developed from observations made during quantitative sampling
during the middle of the growing season. During years of bond release sampling, additional early
spring observations of the reclaimed area parcels involved will be made to fully document spring
ephemeral species.
Species Density: A list of all species present within one meter to either side of the 50 meter cover
measurement transect will be compiled. The resulting number of species observed per 100 sq.m. will
be referred to as "Species Density."
TR -65 42 Revised 9/09
