To finalize the plant materials lists, dominant or commonly occurring species identified in
the Seneca 11-W and 11-W South Extension area vegetation baseline studies were evaluated
for inclusion in the seed mixes or planting lists. The list of these species was further
refined to include the more desirable (i.e., no noxious or strong increaser species) or high
utility species. Realistic and consistent market availability was a strong selection criterion
for all potential species and varieties. Included species which were not present in
vegetation baseline studies were added to aid in achievement of the revegetation goals
specified earlier. Finally, analysis of revegetation monitoring data collected at the Seneca
II Mine since 1985 and review of pertinent revegetation literature was performed. The
resulting information provided insights into seeded species performance, seeding rates,
stand composition, planting rates and survival percentages, and the degree to which natural
regeneration compliments the seed mixes.
Seed Mix No. I (Table 22-1) has been designed for all reclaimed upland sites and
ephemeral drainages on the mine area. The 23 species contained in the mix are adapted to
a broad range of site conditions noted following the mix. Site differences related to aspect,
topography, moisture conditions, and topsoiling will compliment Seed Mix No. 1, vary the
species composition from site to site, and provide opportunities for diverse communities
and habitat. Natural regeneration, variable in composition and degree, will also contribute
to diverse reclaimed communities. Shrub planting areas, described in following sections,
are included to further enhance the diversity of the reclaimed upland areas and ephemeral
drainages.
Seed Mix No. 2 (Table 22-2) will be used in areas that are likely to have wet or potentially
wet site conditions such as the reclaimed haul road areas along the Dry Creek drainage.
Additional sites where this mix may be used are the vicinity of Ponds 005 and 006 and any
other permanent ponds. The species listed in the mix provide the basis for redevelopment
of mesic site or riparian communities. Native species, which are not available as seed or
seedlings, will reestablish in reasonable time frames because of the availability of native
plant propogules in the proximity of the reclaimed areas. Observations of similar areas at
the Seneca 11 Mine indicate Tyl2ha, Carex, and Juncus species have reestablished naturally.
Selected shrub or tree plantings, as discussed later, will complete reclamation of these
sites.
PR-06 13 Revised 10111
