PERMIT #: M -1978 -014
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: October 17, 2013
OBSERVATIONS
The North Chieftain pit was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division /DRMS) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. The site was previously inspected by
the Division on July 10, 2008. Mr. Jason McGraw with General Shale was present during the inspection.
The site is permitted for 126.4 acres. The Division currently holds a financial warranty in the amount of
$73,431.00, which appears adequate based on this inspection. The mine sign and boundary markers (fences)
for the western portion of the site were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12.
The site was inactive during the inspection. The site is "campaign" mined by General Brick. Clay and sand are
mined in a period of weeks and stockpiled on site for later removal and transport to the processing facility in
Lakewood for the production of bricks. The site is divided into three stages. The lease for Stage 1 expires in
2023 according to the Operator. The stage will be mine one or two more times and the material will be
stockpiles on Stage 2 prior to reclaiming the area. The disturbance in Stage 2 is expected to continue to the
south and southeast. Stage 3 is not expected to be mined at this time.
The site was last mined in 2006. Five stockpiles of product, two topsoil stockpiles and an overburden stockpile
were observed during the inspection. The condition of the site was accurately depicted in the 2013 Annual
Report and the TR -02 Mine Map.
No reclamation activities have started at the site. The two topsoil stockpiles and overburden pile were well
vegetation and appeared stable.
No noxious weeds were observed during the inspection. The site is monitored as part of a weed control plan.
No erosion was noted and the stormwater pond in the southwest corner of the site was mostly dry.
No problems were noted during the inspection. Photographs taken during the inspection are attached.
Inspection Contact Address
Mr. Jason McGraw
General Shale Brick, Inc.
1845 W.
