associated features. A single isolated hearth with no other associated artifacts or features will also
be recorded as a site. Isolated finds are defined as less than five prehistoric artifacts or 49 historic
artifacts without associated features. Exceptions to this definition include: a single core reduction
event with a single core and associated reduction debitage; a single pot/bottle drop, where all the
sherds are from a single vessel; or prospector pit with/or without artifacts and no associated
historic structures or features. These resources will be recorded as isolated finds. Once defined,
resources were recorded on OAHP forms.
A handheld Garmin 64CSx GPS unit was used to determine site and isolated find locations.
All GPS readings were georeferenced to UTM meters and NAD 83 (WARS corrected to 2 -5m
accuracy). All field notes, maps, and digital photographs are on file at the MAC office in Eagle,
Colorado.
RESULTS
During this inventory, one prehistoric site was recorded. It is recommended as "needs
data" or potentially eligible for the NRHP.
Site
5RT3256
Site Description. This is an open lithic scatter and possible camp site. It measures 160m
(SW -NE) x 130m (SE -NW) and is situated along a small finger ridge that extends southeast from
the base of a relatively steep side slope to the west. A small unnamed intermittent drainage runs
along the north side of the site. This small drainage flows 3.5 miles east through Twentymile
Park emptying into Fish Creek. Fish Creek is a north flowing permanent tributary of Trout Creek,
which empties into the Yampa River located 6 miles to the north. The site has at least 20cm of
deposition in the center portions, indicated by the depth of a two -track that passes through the
northern portion of the site. Along the western edge of the site there is additional deposition
created by colluvial activity from the side slope. The soils are a light brown sandy silt with a few
cobbles scattered around. Along the south and east perimeters slopewashing has heavily eroded
the soil deposition. Much of the site area has been impacted during range improvement activities
that removed the original sagebrush via plowing and then reseeding with grasses. The two -track
in the northern portion of the site appears to have been created via use rather than machine blading.
There are areas within and around the site boundaries that still contain native vegetation and
undisturbed deposition. Ground surface visibility averaged around 50% and consisted
predominately of mixed grasses and forts, with some scattered areas of short sagebrush.
Observed artifacts consisted of 30+ pieces of lithic debitage, two stone tools, three manos,
five metate fragments, and one piece of fire- cracked rock (FCR). On one piece of metate
fragment ochre residue was noted. Observed debitage consisted of tertiary and secondary flakes
and were predominately Kremmling chert. Flaked stone tools include one biface tip of
Kremmling chert and one tabular chert end scraper. Artifacts were observed in the two -track ruts
For Official Use Only: Disclosure of Site Locations Prohibited (43 CFR §7.18)
