1
~~
~J
the east and west ends of the building at the third level. These are decorative, stationary,
round wood sashes measuring 3'-9" in diameter that have a four life configuration, 2" brick
mold casing and are set in a brick soldier course around the circumference. Type D are four
' windows located on the north wall of the boiler room at the second level, one above each
door. These are stationary mullion units measuring 9'-2" x 4'-0" with a 4-wide, 4-high life
configuration per sash, 1 1/2" brick mold casing and precast concrete sills. The remaining
' eight windows, Type E, are located on the north and south walls of the cupola. These
operating units measure about 5' x 3', have a 5-wide, 2-high life configuration in which the
center 6 lites operate in an awning manner. The building has two large, flush wood panels
on the east and west ends that measures 5' x 6'-8" and have a 4 life over 5 panel door cut in
the center. The north wall of boiler room has four, flush wood panels that open vertically
with track mounts on either side. The ceiling in the generator room has 2" x 4" wood
' framing that is attached to steel trusses with galvanized raised rib metal roofing for the
ceiling membrane. The boiler room lacks a ceiling and is open showing a truss network of
' welded and bolted angle iron with 1 " x 6" steel "C" channel gins over trusses that support
galvanized metal roofing. The eve overhang on the boiler room is approximately 3' wide
and the eve overhang on the generator room is approximately 2' wide. The center of the
boiler room roof has a steel frame, gable roof cupola which is sided and roofed with
' galvanized corrugated metal. This cupola measures roughly 12' wide x 44' long and 5' high
and has four venting windows on each of the long side walls. Prominent in all exterior
views of this massive building is the smokestack for the boiler room. It is outside the
building and is centered on the south wall of the boiler room about two and a half feet from
the exterior wall. It appears to be approximately 150 high (see drawing A9).
1 V Th
l
e
ower mule barn which stands on the south side of the old State Highway 133 is
shown in the colored photograph from the 1930's, but its original date of construction is
' unknown. It is a large, 2-story, wood-framed, metal-roofed structure measuring 60'-3" x 30'-
1 ". The foundation is poured concrete and the floor is dirt. The walls are 3" x 4" stud
framing with perlins between and l" by random width board and Batton siding. The second
' story floor is l" x random width floor boards on 2" x ]0"joists. The interior contains 14
stall areas of varying size and a tack room in the north corner of the main level. The
northwest and southeast walls each have five windows with 6-life stationary sashes that
'
"
'
' measure 2
-4
x 2
-10" and have 4" flat casings. Centered in each gable end of the barn
is/was a wood double hung 6-life over 6-life configuration with a 4" flat casing. On the west
end are two wood sliding double door units measuring 5'-0" x 6'-0" with 4" flat casing and a
stationary panel on each. On the south side of the barn is an open sided shed with a feeding
trough measuring about 50' x 12'. Eighteen feet northeast of the barn is a 12-feet-tall, 21'-5"-
diameter feed silo. The silo has a concrete foundation and floor. The upper wall and roof is
' constructed of corrugated metal (see drawing AS). Associated with the silo and barn is a
corral and field area for the mules. Mules were an essential part of the work force at the
mine until 1956 when mechanization finally replaced all but one of these sturdy animals.
-9-
1
