The
most recent can be found in Colorado Mountains Historic Context (Mehls 1984) and Colorado
History: A Context for Historical Archaeology (Church et al. 2007). The following information is
a synthesis of these resources. For detailed information concerning these contexts the reader is
referred to these documents.
Within the Sage Creek project area ranching, limited farming, and coal mining are the
dominant historic themes. Sites related to these activities show up in the files search and were
expected during inventory.
File and GLO Searches
A Files search conducted through the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation
(OAHP) in Denver on June 2, 2011 revealed numerous previous studies. These are listed in Table
2 and include several large block surveys, and many small block and linear projects.
Table 2 List of previous cultural resource projects within project sections
CO OAHP Reference Number
MC.CM.RI
MC.E.R17
MC.LM.R2
MC.LM.R50
MC.LM.R319
RT.LM.NR60
RT.LM.NR66
RT.LM.NR67
RT.LM.NR76
RT.LM.NR77
RT.LM.NR3
RT.LM.R20
RT. These projects are: MC.LM.R2 conducted in 1977 by CSU -Lab of Public
Archaeology for an archaeological reconnaissance of proposed coal lease area in Moffat, Rio
Blanco and Routt Counties; MC.LM.R50 conducted by Laboratory of Public Archaeology CSU in
1975 of an interim archaeological reconnaissance of proposed coal lease areas in Moffat, Rio
Blanco and Routt Counties; and RT.LM.R87 by Metcalf Archaeology in 2007 for Peabody
Energy's Twentymile Coal West Mine subsidence project.
Fifty-nine cultural resources were recorded by the above inventories of which five fall in or
very near the current project area (Table 3). Of these, four are prehistoric sites and one is historic,
(see Sites section for description).
For Official Use Only: Disclosure of Site Locations Prohibited (43 CFR §7.18)
