Hickenlooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Loretta Pineda
Director
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (CDRMS) has reviewed and found the above
referenced report to be in compliance with Rule 4.05.13(2). The 2nd Quarter 2013 Discharge Monitoring
Reports were received by the Division on July 30, 2013; the report covers the time period from April 1,
2013 through June 30, 2013.
The report indicated outfalls 011, 013 and 014 discharged this quarter. Two excursions of the NPDES
limitations were reported for the Yoast Mine during this quarter. The first involved the total recoverable
iron value from outfall 011 on April 29, 2013. The report included lab results of the sample taken at this
outfall and a copy of the notification e -mail submitted to the Colorado Department of Health and
Environment ( CDPHE) notifying them of the exceedance. The e -mail indicated that this exceedance is
likely due to spring snowmelt.
The second exceedance involved the pH limit at outfall 013 on May 2, 2013. The report includes a copy
of the notification e -mail sent to the CDPHE notifying them of this exceedance. The e -mail indicates
this exceedance is likely due to algae and is likely an upset event given that the cause of the exceedance
can be identified and that the pond is being properly maintained and operated.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (303) 866 -3567 ext. 8120.
Sincerely,
gy
Jared Ebert
Environmental Protection Specialist
Cc: Roy Karo, Seneca Coal Company
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
