t
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
This report was prepared to guide public and private entities interested in or affected by the
potential stocking of non - native fish species in off - channel ponds (public and private). Inundation
during flood events is possible at the pond site and could affect endangered fish. The report
delineates the 50 -year and 100 -year floodplains for the reach of the White River designated as
"critical habitat" by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service). The report allows interested
parties to determine preliminarily whether particular ponds are in the 50 -year and 100 -year
floodplain of the White River.
1.2 Acknowledgements
The assistance and cooperation in supplying information of the individuals, agencies, firms, and
organizations listed below are appreciated and gratefully acknowledged:
Larry F. Lang - Chief, Flood Control & Floodplain Management
Section, Colorado Water Conservation Board
(CWCB);
Brian Hyde - Resource Scientist III, Flood Control and Floodplain
Management Section, CWCB;
Jerry (Ed) Vail - Hydrologist, United States Geological Survey;
Bob McCabe - Colorado State Engineer's Office, Division 5;
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District
Federal Emergency Management Agency
1.3 Related Flood Studies
The Federal Emergency Management Agency prepared Flood Insurance Studies (FIS') with
accompanying Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the Town of Rangely and for unincorporated Rio
Blanco County, dated 9/90 and 2/90 respectively (References 1 & 2). The studies include peak
flow values for 50 -year and 100 -year floods in the vicinity of Rangely, Colorado, along with
detailed floodplain mapping. The Rio Blanco County FIS also includes approximate floodplain
information for the remainder of the study reach of the White River that is not covered by
detailed mapping. The flow values from these studies and the detailed floodplain delineations
have been incorporated into this report.
1
