.

.)

.

DRAFT SOUTH PLAITE RIVER TRIBUTARIES HYDROLOGY REPORT

FOUR MILE CREEK, HORSE CREEK, WEST CREEK, AND TROUT CREEK

1.0 Introduction

This report describes the hydrologic analysis completed for the following four tributaries
to the South Platte River: Four Mile Creek, Horse Creek, West Creek, and Trout Creek.
All of these tributaries are located witll1in Douglas County, Colorado. The Vicinity Map,
Figure 1, illustrates the approximate study area location.

The hydrologic conditions of these tributary watersheds were affected by the June 2002
Hayman fire. The Hayman fire burned approximately 216 square miles (USGS, 2004)
and the location and severity of the bum within the tributary watersheds varied depending
upon the specific location.

The United States Geologic Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Federal Emergency
, Management Agency (FEMA) complded an evaluation of the affects of the fire on the
hydrologic conditions within the South Platte River Tributaries. The results of this
analysis are documented in the April 2004 USGS draft report "Analysis of Post-Fire
Hydrologic Hazards for the 2002 Hayman. Coal Seam. and Missionary Ridge Wildfires.
Colorado".

A number of the sub-basin hydrologic parameters, developed as part of the USGS efforts,
have been included in this analysis to determine peak flows for the tributaries.

1.1 Purpose of Study

The purpose of this hydrology report is to document the procedures used to develop the
peak flow discharges for four of the South Platte River Tributaries. Flood discharges
were developed for the 10-,25-,50-, 100-, and 500-year stonn events. In addition, the
results of the hydrologic modeling are presented with peak flows being identified at
various design points and drainageway confluences within the study area.

These peak flows will be used in the :next phase of the study - completion of floodplain
hydraulic modeling. This hydraulic modeling will identify the floodplain characteristics
and boundaries needed to establish a FEMA regulatory floodplain for Four Mile Creek,
Horse Creek, West Creek, and Trout Creek.

Page 2
