Irrigation Water Requirement (IWR) -Amount of water required from irrigation source to
meet crop consumptive needs. 1WR is calculated as potential evapotranspiration less effective
precipitation.
Net River Depletion -Amount of well pumping less subsurface returns that affects the river at
the time of pumping and during subsequent time steps.
Non-Ditch Augmentation Plan (Non-ditch plan) -An augmentation plan not associated with a
particular ditch service area that provides replacement water to ground water only wells and
wells under multiple ditch service areas (e.g., Sedgwick County Well Users augmentation plan).
(Direct Flow) Recharge Water Rights -Flow rates (cfs) decreed to river headgates for
recharge from ditch seepage and/or seepage from multiple small- to medium-sized recharge
ponds along the ditch.
(Storage) Recharge Water Rights -Volumetric amounts (acre-feet) decreed to specific
recharge ponds or reservoirs.
Well Acreage -Irrigated parcel(s) associated with well structures in SPDSS 2001 GIS Irrigated
Acreage Assessment. Irrigated parcels maybe associated with a surface water source or maybe
ground water only acreage.
APPROACH
Plan Identification
The following general approach was used to identify wells that fall into the following four
categories:
1. Designated basin wells (no augmentation required).
2. Decreed alternate point wells (no augmentation required).
3. Coffin wells (no augmentation required).
4. Wells tied to acreage that requires augmentation.
It was necessary to identify wells that do not require augmentation first to get to the subset of
wells that require augmentation. The 2001 GIS irrigated parcels coverage was reviewed to
identify the locations of lands tied to wells and river diversions (see Figure 1). The irrigated
parcels coverage developed in the SPDSS 2001 GIS Irrigated Acreage Assessment associated
irrigated acreage with river headgate structure IDs and well IDs based on aerial photography and
satellite imagery from 2001 and user interviews.
Designated Basin Wells -Wells physically located within the four designated basins in the
SPDSS Study Area (Camp Creek, Kiowa Bijou, Lost Creek, and Upper Crow Creek) were
initially identified based on a GIS spatial clip of wells located within the designated basin
boundaries, then confirmed based on associated well permits. Irrigated parcels tied to
designated basin wells do not require augmentation since they are considered not tributary to
the South Platte River.
3of16
