modeling process that incorporates the best processes and modeling tools that were developed
by the State for the RGDSS modeling effort, and identify areas for enhancement for the SPDSS
groundwater modeling efforts. The specific objectives for Task 50.3 are to present a scope of
work for implementing the highest priority development tasks, within the contract constraints.
Approach
The following table summarizes the approach to address the Task 50.3 objectives, as presented
in this technical memorandum.
Section Description
1.0 Summa of Data Centered Modelin A roach
2.0 Process Enhancements Sco e of Work
2.1 Coordination Meetin s
2.2 Modelin GIS Repositor and Quer Development
2.3 Stream Flow Routin Pro ram Development
2.4 Process Inte ration and ModGUI Modifications
2.5 Other Development Tasks
3.0 Schedule and Cost Estimate
Section 1 provides an overall summary of the proposed development activities. Section 2
provides the scope of work for the development. Section 3 provides a discussion of the
schedule for completion and estimates of costs.
1.0 Summary of Data Centered Modeling Approach
Four major areas for process enhancement were identified in Task 50.2:
• Development of Modeling GIS Repository to supplement HydroBase and the State GIS
repository
• Preparation of stream flow routing package files
• Enhancement of the model calibration process
• Overall workflow management
The Department of Defense Groundwater Modeling System (GMS) was recommended for
selection as the graphical user interface (GUI) for the SPDSS groundwater component. This
recommendation meets the State's overall goal for its DSS system, as identified in the Task 50.1
Technical Memorandum, to use standard, commercially-available packages where possible to
minimize State development and maintenance efforts. The recommendations identified that the
GUI will be used to the maximum extent to implement the data centered modeling process,
with the addition of external data management interface programs (DMIs), where necessary.
Many of the DMIs that have been developed by the State for the RGDSS will be implemented
for the SPDSS, with little or no modification. Currently available systems for preparation of
model graphics meet the requirements, and only minor modifications are required in this area
to more exploit the capabilities of GMS and the program PM-DIAMOND.
