Summary and Conclusions
Based on working sessions with State personnel, four major areas have been identified for
enhancement of the existing data centered modeling process, namely:
^ Workflow management
^ Preparation of stress-related model files
^ Preparation of stream flow routing model files
^ Model calibration process
These recommended enhancements include incorporation of more automation and
documentation capabilities for managing both model input preparation and post-processing of
model output. The first of these recommended enhancements is modification of the existing
workflow GUI (ModGUI) that has been developed for the RGDSS. The second area of
enhancement will require modifications to the programs StateDGI and StatePP to accommodate
the current MODFLOW packages that will be used in the process will also be required. The
third area modify the current process used for preparing streamflow routing package input
files, since the new USGS streamflow package (SFR) will be used for the SPDSS, and many of
the current processing packages are specific to the RGDSS. The internal capabilities of GMS,
along with a new program developed as part of the SPDSS to modify the files generated in GMS
and to be compatible with the SFR package are recommended. The fourth area includes
enhancements to the model calibration process, including addition of the public domain
program, PEST to the suite of modeling tools for the SPDSS. The calibration process should
remain flexible, with potentially use of a combination of approaches, depending on the
parameter, that may include explicitly defined zones, use of internal MODFLOW-2000 tools or
PEST.
The capabilities of three candidate modeling GUI packages were considered and GMS is
recommended as the most appropriate package for selection for the SPDSS.
Recommendations
The following are recommendations based on the work completed under Task 50.2:
• Select GMS as the primary modeling GUI.
• Enhance the existing workflow GUI (program ModGUI) to incorporate the recommended
processing packages and increase the degree of automation and documentation capabilities.
