streamline command file preparation for selected individual packages. Full automation to
execute all of the individual packages is not recommended during Phase 3, since this process
must remain flexible while the model is being developed and calibrated. This program will be
modified to incorporate into the workflow any new packages that are developed along with
modifications to existing packages, and to generate an overall log file for operations. It is
anticipated that operation of most programs external to GMS will be controlled from this
application. Functions that are currently provided by programs StateCU and StateDGI will not
be included within the revisions to program ModGUI.
The second major area recommended for revision and enhancement is that of stress-related
information for recharge, evapotranspiration, wells and drains. These currently are prepared
using programs StateDGI, StateCU and StatePP, as documented in the Task 50.1 TM.
Modification of both programs StateDGI and StatePP are recommended. The program
StateDGI matches GIS coverages for stress-related features and information from the
groundwater model, including the computational grid and layer elevations. This processed
information is used in the program StatePP, along with files from program StateCU that are
post-processed by program AGG to prepare the simulation files for the recharge,
evapotranspiration, well and drain packages. This process will require modification, since
modeling for the SPDSS will utilize the new USGS packages for wells and evapotranspiration
that will modify the approach that is currently implemented in the pre-processor packages. In
addition, the program StateDGI is currently coded in the Avenue scripting language, which is
no longer supported in current versions of ArcGIS that are utilized by the State and so needs to
be converted into a supported language. Program StateDGI, as it currently exists, must be run
each time a change is made to the model grid since much of the work done in this tool matches
information to the individual model grid cells. The processing in StateDGI can be streamlined
since layer elevation data will no longer be necessary as this function is now done internally
within MODFLOW-2000 using the multi-node well (MNW) package, recommended for use in
the SPDSS. Other functions provided by StateDGI and StatePP will be maintained to ensure
compatibility with water budget elements computed by StateCU. The program StateDGI
should be migrated to a currently supported scripting language, and be simplified to consider
that the MNW package for wells will no longer require the processing of layer elevations in this
package. Program StatePP will also need to be modified to prepare the revised format input
files for the MNW package.
The third area for revision and enhancement is associated with preparation of stream package
files. The recently released USGS stream flow routing (SFR) package will be used in the SPDSS
modeling effort. The input files for the SFR package differ from the previous package used by
the State, thus modifications to the current processes will be required. The internal capabilities
of the recommended modeling GUI (see Section 3.0), in combination with a new software
package that is recommended for development under the SPDSS will be used to generate the
stream flow routing package files. Currently, a series of programs (programs mkstr, mkq, build
and ModEx) that contain features specific to the RGDSS are used to prepare these files. These
programs are not suitable for direct use in the SPDSS, however, design features of these
programs will be preserved and potentially used for processing that is not done internally
within the modeling GUI.
