Title
RGDSS - Rio Grande Historic Crop Consumptive Use Analysis
Description
The documentation is for the Rio Grande Basin Historic Crop Consumptive Use Analysis, developed during the RGDSS implementation for the period 1950 through 2002. It includes 100 percent of the crop consumptive use in the basin for the period. Documentation consists of the final Historic Crop Consumptive Use Analysis Report and supporting appendices.

The acreage with ground water supply is the total acreage of parcels under a structure that
have an active well for each year. The acreage irrigated by sprinklers is the total acreage
of parcels under a structure that are irrigated with sprinklers for each year. The maximum
monthly pumping volume is the decreed or permitted capacity for well permits and water
rights associated with irrigated parcels under a structure. Acreage with ground water
supply and the corresponding well pumping volume are based on the well processing
program developed for RGDSS and outlined in the memorandum Task 3.1 -Data
Centered Ground Water Model, July 2002, developed by the RGDSS Spatial System
Integration Contractor.
The procedures for estimating ground water and sprinkler acreage and maximum monthly
pumping volumes by structure are described in the Rio Grande Historic Crop
Consumptive Use -Annual Time Series Parameters memorandum, included in Appendix
A. Figure 9 shows atime-series of the overall estimated ground water acreage,
corresponding permitted or decreed capacity, and sprinkler acreage for the Rio Grande
Basin.
Figure 9
Estimated Ground Water Acreage, Permitted or Decreed
Pumping Capacity, and Sprinkler Acreage
350000
.~
,~.
.~
.~
,~.
~~~,~,
t
0
1000000
900000
~ 300000
rn
v
Q 250000
v
Y
~~ 200000
Q
v
c
m 150000
v
v 100000
c
0
~ 50000
800000 v
a
700000 Q-
v
v
600000 v
U
500000 `6
a
U
400000 a
m
U
300000 ~
.Q
200000 ~
a
100000
1950 1955 1960 1965 1970 1975 1980 1985 1990 1995 2000
GW Acreage Sprinkler Acreage - - Permitted/Decreed Pumping Capacity
The ground water use mode determines how surface water and ground water are used to
meet irrigation water requirements. The "mutual ditch" approach applies surface water to
lands equally, as in a mutual ditch system, and ground water is then pumped to meet the
deficit on lands with a ground water supply as follows:
cureport_6-2004.doc 26 of 48 June, 2004
