Mineral Resources
For the Consumptive Uses and Losses Summary, StateCU reads monthly mineral
resources consumptive use data directly and does not perform additional analysis.
1. Data Collection
The data necessary for determining water use by the mining industry is not readily
available at the state level. However, the USGS estimates mineral resource consumptive
use by State and County on a five-year basis. The most current estimates are for 1995.
This information can be obtained from the USGS WEB Site at
http://h2o.er.us~s.~ov/public/watuse. The following steps will lead to the appropriate
files:
• Access the WEB Site at the above address
• Choose "Download 1995 data for counties and watersheds"
• Choose "Colorado, County data file"
• Save the file to disk, or extract the information from the screen
Only the most current estimates (1995) are available on-line, however, there is an email
address on the WEB Site where earlier data can be requested. This request was made for
1990 and included in the Consumptive Uses and Losses analysis as described below.
2. Prepare Data for StateCU
Monthly mineral resources consumptive use estimates are required for each year in the
Consumptive Uses and Losses Summary period of interest. Therefore, linear
interpolation was used to estimate the mining use for years between the five-year USGS
estimates. These yearly use numbers were then divided by twelve to estimate monthly
use.
Mineral resources consumptive use was input to StateCU by basin and county. However,
the USGS data does not indicate the specific location of mining use within a county.
Therefore, the amount of mining use within each basin was determined based on the land
area of each county located within the basin (see Table 2) using a spreadsheet. Table 10
shows mineral resources consumptive use by county. Mineral resources consumptive use
was input to StateCU by county.
C:\Documents and Settings\ckf.DWR\My Documents\AppendA_culoss.doc Septei~bdrl2o'~~099
