Smith, the President of the United Sportsman's Council of

Colorado, announced the Organization"s strong support for the inclusion

of additional segments of the Dolores to be added

in the Wild and

Scenic River .1egislation pending in the Senate at this time.

Initial House and Senate Subcommittees on Public Lands have considered

bills that would have protected some 105 miles of this outstanding

Colorado river as either Wild, Scenic or Recreational. Smith said

the Study Team, which consisted of state BLM, Forest Service and Bureau

of Outdoor Recreation representatives, downgraded several important

sections and omitted entirely the stretch from the confluence of the

San Miguel and Dolores down to the Colorado River.

Smith said his organization is requesting the Colorado delegation and

Governor Lamm to stand firm for a minimum of 220 miles of this out-

standing resource to be classified under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

The Dolores is the first of twelve rivers to be reviewed 'for protective

classification in Colorado. At present, none of Colorado's rivers or

segments are in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Smith said

this was unfortunate and a gross oversight in that none of the rivers

were yet protected. Under Colorado water laws, water is not considered

a beneficial use in the natural stream or for fisheries. It must be

diverted for energy, industry or urban use. House ~ction was re~~~~

stalled because of initial language that would have ~~~'~~the a ".~\
McPhee Dam. Smith commented that the dam language is\ inc~t~lllJ\U~
O ,""\!)f
. 'lJ!}, ,~~S

i. ..
