"~
'-.....

January 1960

San Luis Valley Project, Colorado
Closed Basin Division

POTENrIAL ALTERNATE WATER
DELIVERY PLANS

Reconnaissance designs and estimates have been prepared, based
on four alternative plans for delivery of salvaged waters to the irri-
gated lands of the Closed Basin west of the proposed main conveyance
channel discussed in the Closed Basin report. The general layout for
the four plans is indicated on Drawing 253-504-1800. The studies
were based on a reconnaissance report finding that about 65,000 acre-
feet of water could be salvaged a.nnuaJ..ly, and assumed that the maximum
diversion westward would be 60,000 acre-feet, which is the approximate
annual canal deli very requirement for the irr:lgable lands in the
vicinity of Mosca-Hooper.

Subsequent and more detailed llydrology studies indicate that
amounts considerably- in excess of 60,000 acre-feet could be beneficially
used in the irrigated areas west of the proposed main conveyance channel.
However, it is cousidered that the reconnaissance estimates of the poten-
tial plans discussed below f1\Z'nish reasonable measures of the per acre-
foot cost of westward diversion of the salvageable waters. Cost esti-
mates were based on JUly 1959 prices.

Plans Studied

Four general plans of disposing of the salvage water on the
presently irrigated lands were studied to indicate the cost of such
undertakings. All as5U1l1e diversion of salvaged waters at Station 1360
on the proposed main conveyance channel near San Luis Lake. No separate
storage works are required to regulate the salvaged waters for delivery
to the western lands, as a.ny necessary regulation could be provided by
use of San Luis Lake. All follow the same alinement westward.

f' ,~ ..... ~ .~~ {')
~J'~h",~UJ
