~
~ OREGON STATE PARKS AND RECREATIOn BRANCH
'is

OO[)u25

The Willamette is a remarkable river. The family of
man has flourished in the Willamette River system for
thousands of years. When the modem era of migration
and colonization swept into Oreqon, the WiIlamette
became the mainstreet fOf everything that happened.
People traveled by the river. produce and supplies were
shipped in and out by the river, and Oreqon's principal
cities started as river towns and stearn boat landings.
More than half the people in Oregon now live within ten
miles of the Willamette and over 60% of all Oreqonians
reside within the WilIarnette River Basin.

The natural values of the WiIlamette River and the
quality of life it offers, which drew the early settlers
west in the last century, are still OUJ"S today in larqe
measure. The WilIamette River Greenway Program is a
cooperative state and local government effort designed to
maintain and enhance the scenic, recreational, and
historical qualities of lands along the river, while
permitting the continuation of existing uses on private
and public lands and providing special protection for
aqricultural uses. The Greenway Proqram also offers
opportunities for boating. picnicking, wildlife study, and
overnight camping on public lands.
Respect the rights of those who make their homes
and livelihoods along the Willamette River. Most lands in
the Greenway are in private ownership. Public use of
private lands without the owners express permission is
trespass! State-owned lands within the Greenway have
been signed for public use. The river mile is posted as
measured from the mouth of the Multnomah Channel,
Main Stem Willamette and the Coast Fork.
r-\ Identifies State Greenway public use area and the
\:::::::I river mile.
@Limit of public use area on State Greenway Lands.

All facility development on Slate Greenway lands
(named accesses or landings) is scheduled for completion
by the summer of 1979. For detailed information call
weekdays 8 a.m..5 p.m. toll free 1.800-452.7813, or in
Portland 229.5700 and ask for State Parks (extension
6500). In Salem call 378-6500.
