IN .EI"LY UFE. TO:
N1621 (GRCA-8213)

United States Department of the Interior

RECEIVED
JUL 10 1998

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK
P.O. BOX 129
GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA 86023~129

Colorado Water
Consarvation Board

JUL 0 6 1998

Dear Constituent:

Grand Canyon National Park, in conjunction with the State of
Arizona Game and Fish Department and the U.S. Fish and wildlife
Service, are considering introducing the Kanab Ambersnail
(Oxyloma haydeni kanabensis) into three springs within the
confines of the park.

This species of endangered snail has been located at only two
locations. One population is located near the town of
Colorado City, Arizona, on private land (Three Lakes) and is
threatened by nearby land development. The other population
exists at Vasey's Paradise on the Colorado River within
Grand Canyon National Park. Total occupied habitat for this
species is less than one acre.

Establish of additional populations of the snails in other areas
will ensure that, if disease or a catastrophic event such as a
flash flood or spring failure occurs, this species would not be
lost. Suitable sites have been assessed for this reintroduction.
These sites are located at River Mile 47.1, river right (referred
to as "Keyhole Spring"), River Mile 116.6, river left (Upper
Elves Chasm), and River Mile 136.1, river right (Lower Deer Creek
Spring.) These three sites provide optimum biological and
environmental conditions for the snails, and are located away
from high visitor use areas.

Enclosed are site location maps for each of the three springs,
and a Draft Environmental Assessment describing the project. If
you have comments or concerns regarding this proposed action,
please contact Wildlife Biologist R.V. Ward at 520-638-7756, or
Cultural Resource Program Manager Janet Balsam at 520-638-7758 by
Wednesday August 5, 1998.

Sincerely,

, 0' 'Z.
W~AJ.l rvo~ .
'.D{~ r;:A r'
. f'>' Z
""~ .
F..",.,..e ""cPt-
r-o..::>S.I '
f4..Nlf.,-",cke~

~~ dO--~

Robert L.
