.

.

,) {l1'C.":;
. ...0",.,

WATER RESOURCES OF EL RIO DE LOS PINOS

The waters of a plethora of nameless tributaries, Rincon

la Vaca, and the North Fork of Los pinos River coalesce in an

alpine meadow high in the Southern San Juan Mountains to form the

Rio de Los Pinos. From these headwaters, some 35 miles northwest

of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, the river flows in a southwesterly

direction to Columbus, Colorado, and then straight south toward

Navajo Reservoir, ending 12 miles above its former junction with

the San Juan River.

A stream gage maintained by the U. S. Geological Survey from

the years 1938 through 1954, high in the drainage below Snowslide

Canyon, determined that the average discharge was 34.5 cfs, or

24,980 AF annually.

NO gage was ever maintained at the lower end of the study

segment; however, from 1928 until 1940. the pine River gage, about

2~ miles below the present site of Vallecito Reservoir, recorded

stream flows before the construction of the reservoir. The average

flow for this time period was 345 cfs, or 249,780 AF annually.

This figure includes the flows of Vallecito Creek. In order to

make a fair estimation of the flows in Los pinos River in the study

area, the flows of Vallecito Creek must be subtracted. NO gage

existed on Vallecito Creek until 1963. Therefore. the attached

hydrograph was protracted from the flows of Vallecito Creek sub-

tracted from the monthly inflow at Vallecito Reservoir obtained

from U. S. Bureau of Reclamation records.

"
