In orner to get a realistic picture of <br />hew the Vietnamization program was going, I spent most of my time ~ay <br />fran Saigon and in the field. The trip included: a CClI'q)lete helicopter <br />tour of the Mekong Delta with stops at various villages, ootposts, hamlets, <br />and military bases, supporting the U.S. Navy Riverine forces; a day and <br />an overnight visit with the Anlyls 1st Divisioo at Lai Khe, north of Sai- <br />gon, incltxling side trips to rrany of the outlying fire support bases; dis- <br />cussirns with the leaders of a oonsolidated r-bntagnarcl. vi llage near Pleiku <br />in the Central Highlands; briefings fran Vietnamese military leaders in <br />the II Corps area and U.S. Army officials with the 4th Division located <br />at ~ Enari j a survey of the MaI'ine Corps activities in and around the <br />Da Nang area; a brief inspection trip to the Imperial City of Hue to ob- <br />serve the re-bui1ding effort which has follOoled the TET enemy offensive <br />of 1968; and a special tour of a new refugee village built and paid for <br />by the VietnaIrese people. <br /> <br />Scnale Office BUildJOg, \\'a$hJOglon.
