THE LYONS RECORDER Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado Saturda~ August 2, 1919 A SECOND FLOOD THURSDAY AS BAD AS THE FIRST ONE The Second Plood Did Not Confine Itself to the North St. Vrain But Done Lots of Damage in South Canon by Injuring Approaches to Bridges and Washes in Road. ESTES PARK CUT OFF WHEN BIG THOMPSON BRIDGES GO. Again Thursday afternoon heavy clouds gathered over the mountains, in the South and North Canons alike, and a heavy rain began to fall about 4:30. Excitement and anxiety developed as the storm increased and both rivers began to raise. The climax came about 6 o'clock when Miss Lois Hall gave the alarm over the phone that another and perhaps heavier flood than the one of the day before was coming down the North Fork. By this time word had been received that the South Fork was beyond its banks and that manv bridaes had gone out up that canon. It "'as not long until the North river was about as high as the preceding day, all the houses flooded again in the lower part of town witll black, stinking, muddy water, and the inhabitants almost parallized with fear. After a hard days work the county gang had just completed a temporary bridge across the North Fork so that the mail cars from Estes and Allenspark coming down the South Canon could cross when a rush of water took it out completely. At 9 o'clock Thursday evening word was received that many bridges had been taken out of the Loveland Big Thompson Canon. This completely cuts off Estes Park from egress. Just as we go to press a mail car reaches the North Fork bridge, coming down the South Fork from Eastes Park, and transferred the mail across to Lyons via "log route". This will certainly be good news to the Eastes Park peo- ole, who had the sad news that they were completely marooned from the outer world. The driver on the mail car reports the roads and bridges in bad shape in some instances, but can be made fairly passable in a few days. Thus by the time the temporary bridge is completed admitting enterance to Lyons, the only road into Estes Park the South St. Vrain canon road via Allenspark--will be open for travel. This is also good news for Lyons.
