Colorado Climate Center - Colorado Collaborative Rain and Hail Study

Introduction

This memo is a proposal by staff to participate in a prototype science education project by
providing up to $10,000 in financial support to the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State
University.

Background

In 1998, staff of the Colorado Climate Center demonstrated that a collaborative volunteer
adult and student network to measure rain and hail is feasible and can enhance local networks,
meet special data needs, and provide educational experiences and research opportunities on many
levels. With financial support from cooperating agencies, the Center plans to expand the volunteer
system in 1999 to include other portions of the Colorado Front Range urban corridor such as
agricultural regions of northeastern Colorado and nearby mountain communities.

The attached paper by Nolan Doeskin of the Colorado Climate Center describes the goals,
history, and results of the 1998 project in detail. He will be at the meeting to answer any
questions.
