Stanton, P.E.~ . <br />Chief, Project Planning and Construction Section <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />January 15, 1999 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Agenda Item 16d, January 27-28, 1999 Board Meeting - <br />Construction Fund - Non-ReiInbursable Projects and Investigations <br />Colorado Climate Center - Colorado Collaborative Rain and Hail Study <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />This memo is a proposal by staff to participate in a prototype science education project by <br />providing up to $10,000 in financial support to the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State <br />University. <br /> <br />Background <br /> <br />In 1998, staff of the Colorado Climate Center demonstrated that a collaborative volunteer <br />adult and student network to measure rain and hail is feasible and can enhance local networks, <br />meet special data needs, and provide educational experiences and research opportunities on many <br />levels. With financial support from cooperating agencies, the Center plans to expand the volunteer <br />system in 1999 to include other portions of the Colorado Front Range urban corridor such as <br />agricultural regions of northeastern Colorado and nearby mountain communities. <br /> <br />The attached paper by Nolan Doeskin of the Colorado Climate Center describes the goals, <br />history, and results of the 1998 project in detail. He will be at the meeting to answer any <br />questions. <br /> <br />1 <br />
