United States Geological Survev (USGS)
Mr. Kuhn began by explaining that his presentation referred to the results of the study he is doing
with the cooperation of the CWCB evaluating streamflows in 2002 and droughts, and putting
them in perspective of the historical streamflows of the state of Colorado. He mentioned he
began with the last drought in 1999 and looked at the streamflows through 2002. Mr. Kuhn
explained further that streamflow is what CWCB and other agencies are interested in as an
indicator for water management issues, etc. He also said there are many agencies interested in
this study funded by CWCB and USGS. Mr. Kuhn said he began his approach of the study by
first selecting the number of streamflow gauges in Colorado that were operating in both 2002
and 1977 and analyzing the steamflow data. He also analyzed historical periods of drought
based on streamflows for a defined period. Mr. Kuhn said that the year 2002 has the lowest
streamflow on record for the state of Colorado.
