SILT WATER CONSERVANCY DISTRICT
GRAND RIVER CANAL DIVERSION STRUCTURE ON THE COLORADO RIVER
Looking at Concrete Diversion Wall and
Outlet Structure
Project Description
Looking Downstream
The Grand River Canal diversion structure is located on the Colorado River, approximately
1.5 miles southeast from the Town of Silt. Water was diverted into the existing structure by means
of a 600 -ft. long earthem/gravel embankment that extended across the Colorado River. Under that
previous configuration, the earthern diversion dike was extremely vulnerable to seasonal flooding
and was routinely rebuilt on an annual basis. To eliminate the annual maintenance and
environmental problem a new $165,000 concrete diversion and headgate structure was constructed
approximately 1000 -ft. upstream of the existing diversion structure. From the new diversion
structure the irrigation water is then conveyed in a 42" HDPE low head irrigation pipe for
approximately 940 -ft. to the existing canal.
Project Data
Sponsor: Silt Water Conservancy Dist.
