Colarado River water
is diverted into the Government Highline Canal (GHC) at the Grand Valley Project Diversion Dam (Roller
Dam), roughly 23 miles northeast of Grand Junction. An annual average of 58,000 acre-feet of water is then
diverted to the Power Canal from the GHC nearly 5 miles downstream from the dam. This water passes
under the Colorado River via the Stokes Gulch Siphon where the District pumps it to Canal No. 1 and No. 2
for distribution to its 5,000 customers over a service area of 9,200 acres. The siphon was constructed in the
1920's and was in need of repair. This project was responsible for the reconstruction of the siphon using 12-
foot by 12-foot precast concrete box structures.
Project Data
Sponsor: Orchard Mesa County: Mesa Water Source: Colorado River
Irrigation District
Terms of Loan: $545,400, over 30 years @ Substantial Completion Date: 10-1-2008
2.50%
Design Engineer: Water Management Consultants, Denver, CO
Construction Contractor: Palisade Constructors, Inc., Palisade, CO
Construction Elements: * 12 ft. x 12 ft. precast concrete box siphon
Average Annual Diversion: 58,323 acre-feet
Replaced 100ft long siphon (looking west)
