i
Memorandum
To: Ray Alvarado, CWCB
Bill Tyner, DWR
i
From: Riverside Technology, inc., Timothy Martin and Claudio Schneider
Subject: Recommendations for Satellite Imagery and Other Data for 2003 Irrigated Lands Update
in the Lower Arkansas River Basin
Date: 03 March 2003
1. Introduction and Background
This memo provides recommendations for Landsat image acquisition and other data development for a
2003 irrigated lands update in the Lower Arkansas River Basin. The recommendations are based on
consultations with Division 2 and our experience with irrigated lands assessment and multi - temporal crop
signature analysis in the South Platte Basin and other watersheds in the western U.S. We met with
Division 2 and CWCB personnel at RTi offices in January 2004 and again at Division 2 offices in late
February 2004. Division 2 provided information on cropping patterns and consumptive use, irrigated
lands data, and discussed their methods and activities conducted over the past several years. Also, we
conducted Internet -based searches for imagery and data products, contacted data providers and discussed
the status of digital orthophotograph data production with the USGS.
Our area of interest is primarily focused on irrigated lands along the mainstem of the Arkansas River from
Pueblo Reservoir east to the state line. If intensive study is needed for other areas within Division 2,
additional data may be required.
2. Summary of Costs for Recommended Satellite Images and Related Data
Table 1 provides a summary of the cost of data that is described in more detail in subsequent sections of
this memo. The costs are for data only and do not include costs for data processing, interpretation, or
analysis.
Table 1: Summary of Estimated Costs
Description
Cost
Multidate Landsat imagery for Irrigated Lands Assessment
$ 7,920
Additional Landsat imagery to cover entire Division 2
$ 1,994
Digitial Orthophotographs
$ 8,500
Total
$18,414
