Sparks, Director <br />R. H. Gildersleeve, Deputy Director <br />SUBJECT: Report on the Nelson Buck Unit, Kansas <br />The Director, Region 7. U.S.B.R., has furnished us with <br />a draft of his proposed report on the Nelson Buck Unit, Kansas, <br />under date of February, 1967. <br />This is a unit of the Kanaska Division, Missouri River <br />Basin Project, and is located in northwest Kansas alone Beaver <br />Creek. The plan provides for construction of the nmltiple -- purpose <br />Herndon Dam and Reservoir for irrigation, flood control, recreation, <br />and fish and wildlife conservation. <br />The reservoir would have a total initial capacity of <br />141,100 acre feet, including flood control capacity of 81,200 acre <br />feet, conservation capacity of 55,900 acre feet, and 4,000 acre <br />feet inactive. Releases from the reservoir would be made as <br />necessary for irrigation of 3,000 acres of valley lands along .Beaver <br />Creek. Diversions to lands would be made by streambank pumps, to <br />be privately installed. No distribution system would be included <br />in the project. <br />The total cost of the project is 419,379.000, allocated <br />as follows: <br />Irrigation <br />Flood Control <br />Recreation <br />Fish and wildlife <br />Highway Improvement <br />Total <br />$ 2.829.900 <br />13.653,200 <br />1.784,800 <br />1. 006,100 <br />105.000 <br />$19.379.000 <br />
