Defmitions of endangered and threatened species follow the Endangered Species Act of 1973, P. L 93.205. An endangered species is "any species (or subspecies) which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range." Threatened species are defmed as "any species (or subspecies) which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range." These defmitions require knowledge of natural ranges and population abundance and indi- cate that significant reductions in range and/or abundance should be determined for placement in either categol)'. A third term, indeterminate status, will be used where knowledge is !ad.:ing for placement into one of the other categories but the species is thought tobe rare. These definitions apply to river systems, not political boundaries, for fish. Therefore, we need to differentiate between endangered species and endangered populations which are rare only in a particular area (Utah) and not throughout most of their natural range. Each species will be discussed in five categories: 1. Description. A general description of the species and characteristics separating it from similar and/or oftenamfused species. .. 2. Documentation. This section will examine the decrease in range and/or abundance that has initiated the rare dassification. It will give original range and abundance or the most complete knowledge of such avail- able. Present natural populations will De documented, with emphas!s on those in Utah. Areas most important for reproduction will be men- tioned, if known. 1.
