MODFLOW is a USGS
groundwater flow model utilized in CDSS to aid in water resources planning. The proposed
enhancemen ts were solicited by CWCB and DWR in order to make MODFLOW more useful in CDSS
modeling. The USGS is contributing $12,500 in matching funds.

Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Board request the General Assembly authorize $ 50 ,000 from the Constructio n
Fund to be appropriated to the Department of Natural Resources for allocation to the USGS to perform
.

Background
CDSS first started utilizing MODFLOW during the development of the Rio Grande DSS. During model
development, the need was found for enhancements to MODFLOW that would address some of the
groundwater modeling issues in the San Luis Valley. The CWCB and DWR coordinated with the USGS
to incorporate these enhancements into MODFL OW, which have been successfully implemented in
CDSS.

During the current development of the alluvial groundwater model in the South Platte DSS, a need was
found for further enhancements to MODFLOW. The USGS was asked to submit this application to
perform these enhancements. These enhancements include the following two items: 1) The capability of
tracking individual model stress input components, from model - input fields to the volumetric budget
output tables generated by MODFLOW; and 2) A user - specified opt ion for continuation of model
execution despite solver nonconvergence.
Watershed Pr otection & Flood Mitigation er Supply Planning & Finance
