SPDSS Memorandum
Draft
To: Ray Alvarado, Ray Bennett
From: Riverside Technology, inc., Steve Malers, Tim Martin
Subject: SPDSS Task 95.1 Deliverable -Evaluate Spatial Data
Date: January 5, 2005
1. Introduction
This memo is a deliverable for the SPDSS Spatial System Integration Component Task 95:
95.1 Evaluate Spatial Data. Evaluate spatial data that could be created from HydroBase
considering their potential use in StateView, TSTooI, and other CDSS applications, including:
climate stations, precipitation stations, etc. Make recommendations to the State on the need for
new data layers and the required changes to CDSS software.
Deliverable: A memorandum describing proposed additional point data layers to be created from
HydroBase and their potential for use in CDSS software.
2. Approach
The completion of this task presented significant challenges due to a number of issues, including: design
limitations in HydroBase; a migration of software technologies and design in SPDSS Phases 1 and 2; an
increase in the number of CDSS users.
In order to have a more complete deliverable, the activities for this task were postponed. This allowed
time to complete a number of activities, including:
• The handling of time series in TSTooI was reworked, leading to a complete documentation of
HydroBase time series data types in the TSTooI HydroBase Input Type appendix. This document
gives a good indication of the large number of data types that are present in HydroBase and
illustrates the complexity of defining a standard for referencing the data. TSTooI can now query
all time series in HydroBase.
StateView/CWRAT was updated to use the same time series identifiers as TSTooI. Most
StateView/CWRAT users are not aware of the issues with uniquely identifying time series, and
consequently the information presented in the TSTooI HydroBase Input Type appendix is not as
visible in StateView/CWRAT as it is in TSTooI. However, the consistency in identifying time
series data types allows underlying software components to be compatible. For example, the
StateView/CWRAT stations data display now lists the same station-related time series as TSTooI.
• The spatial data inventory for CDSS was updated to reflect SPDSS data, information related to the
SWSI project, and special considerations for the SPDSS ArcIMS implementation. The spatial data
inventory identifies data layer types and organizes the layers into logical groups.
The results of the above activities are a more complete, well organized, and standardized inventory of
time series and spatial data types, especially as they relate to data in HydroBase. The relationship
between time series and spatial data in HydroBase is typically made using a structure (location where
administrative data exist, including water rights and diversion/release records) or station (locations that
are not structures, where time series data are collected). Structures and stations are physical or legal
Page 1 Of 5 ~RTversfde TeChnafogy, lnc,
W.~fe: Resources Er`gineering and C.onsufting
