Colorado River Basin Vllater Use Growth and
, ,
Vllater Demand Pro~ections
J
Department of Natural Resources-Colorado Water Conservation Board
This is part of the CWCB's continuing effort to help ~~ ~~~ 7~ F
communities determine whether their existing water
supplies are adequate. This latest effort began in 1999 Greg Walcher
with a conservation survey of local governments, DNR Executive Director
publication and distribution of a dam site inventory, Rod Kuharich
and series of ineetings in each major water basin. Tasks CWCB Director
yet to be completed include the publication of water
information fact sheets, a drought planning assessment/
carry-over storage assessment, and these preliminary
growth and water demand projection fact sheets. These
materials and others are available at our website.
Basin StatistiCS - These numbers give a general overview
of the current (2000) and future (2030) statistics within the
basin.
Year Population Irrigated Total Diversions Current
(2) Acres (5) (8) Useable
Storage (6)
2000 193,226 314,000 980,000 acre 726,700
feet acre feet
2030 373, 700 314, 000 1,296, 000 acre 726, 700
feet acre feet
Percent +93% 0% +75% 0%
Change
Colorado River Basin Population by County ~2)
Colorado River Basin Projected Future Water Demands ~ 5, g
4000
3500

3000 Native Supply
Total Demand/Diversions
y
~
~
~

500 ~ Irrigation CU

Municipal CU
~~ Total CU

~ ~ Exports
~
,.
~ Zooo
~
~
i 1500
~
~
L
v
a

1000

500 .~

0

2000 2010 2020 2030
Year
S~ Native Supply =
Undepleted, unregulated
available surface water.
Total Demandsl
Diversions = Total
amount of water removed
from the stream, some
water may return to the
stream if it is not
consuptively used.
CU= Consumptive Use=
amount of water that is
consumed and lost to the
system while applying
water to a beneficial use.
March 2002
Q-oJ~~ GQ'~~0 Q-~~0 ~P~~,~ ~J~~~ ~~~P Q~,~~~ ~~\~~~
~P GJ
