South Platte River Basin
Denver, Colorado 9.8.03
30
Municipal, agricultural, recreation, engineering, environmental
Ensure strong and diverse participation in the SWSI process : Make sure that the
public is adequately informed and involved, and that complex data and
information are presented in ways that people understand. This is a historic,
collaborative approach; the ?old? way of doing things should be abandoned in
order to find win-win solutions for everyone. This can be done by setting goals for
river and stream use, and then working collaboratively to manage the resources
accordingly.
Solutions must address the diverse needs in the South Platte basin: From large
urban centers that use treated water to rural areas that use wells for their water,
the basin has diverse interests and needs. SWSI?s solutions must address all of
these needs.
Water quality must be managed differently throughout the basin: Water quality
concerns were expressed for streams, reservoirs, and aquifers. An example is
the Hayman fire a few years ago, which has increased the sediment in streams
and reservoirs. A project that will help remove the sediment is ready for
implementation, once the final analysis has been completed.
There are multiple approaches to water management: Consider growth control in
the basin as a means of conserving water, especially for those in the basin who
rely on aquifers (wells) for water. Growth control is a major way to manage supply
and use. Also, SWSI needs to study and recommend better ways to manage
conjunctive use and reuse of groundwater and aquifers.
Research a 1992 New Mexico tree ring study for insights on rainfall trends.
Provide a link between the websites of water interest groups and the CWCB/SWSI
website.
