Building on an Understanding of Beliefs and
Values, Ways to Move Beyond Polarized
Positions and Find Creative Win-Win Solutions
South Platte Basin Roundtable
HB1177 Process
May 2, 2006
MaryLou M. Smith
Aqua Engineering, Inc.
What Dr. Kathlene says makes sense.
Uncovering and understanding the beliefs and values that underlie
our opinions is key to finding ways we can collaborate and build
solutions we can all get behind.
But how do you go about uncovering and understanding YOUR
beliefs and values? The beliefs and values not of those in Dr.
Kathlene’s Q-sort, but of those of you here in this room? The
beliefs and values which will be the raw material you each bring to
your upcoming decision making? How do you find out what those
beliefs and values are? And which ones you share?
In past meetings, you have already been talking about this.
You have a subcommittee that’s thinking innovatively about a blog
site to give you all an opportunity to bring out what some of those
shared beliefs and values are. At your April meeting, you decided
to put that on hold for now with the decision to take two other
steps first:
1) Dr. Kathlene’s presentation on Beliefs and Values
2) A facilitated session on Beliefs and Values
