Colorado Mountain College - Rocky Mountain Fen Research Project

Introduction

The Colorado Mountain College - Timberline Campus (CMC) in Leadville has applied for a
$100,000 non-reimbursable investment for a project designed to explore the extent to which the
harvest and transplantation of slow forming organic peat soils, from an area of potential impact to a
specifically prepared receiver site, can serve as mitigation of fen impacts. The CMC is collaborating
on this project with the City of Aurora Utilities Department and the Pueblo Board of Water Works.
The total project cost is estimated to be more than $950,000 over a five year period.

The entire application packet from the CMC is included for the Board's review, the first four
pages of which is a summary description of the project, a project cost estimate and schedule, and a
preliminary design concept of the "Fen Reaper". (attachment) The project is located approximately
10 miles south of Leadville along State Highway 24 and one mile west of Highway 24 in Lake
. County. The site is situated on the Hallenbeck Ranch which is owned by the City of Aurora.
