~
N
~...,
<.:;.>

~)
':.:;

Report to the Colorado Water Conservation Board

On Irrigation Demonstrations
In Grand Valley

At long last the Grand' Valley Salinity Control Project

is about to get underway. This project presents opportunities

for water conservation that have long attracb:d the interest

of this Board.

Six years ago we began with the Grand Valley Water
'.

Purification Project to line canals and laterals to prevent

seepage. It was determined that this activity was cost

effective and finally lead to the Bureau of Reclamation

salinity project which will line all the canals and laterals
in Grand Valley,

The Bureau of Reclamation will soon be planning reha-

bilitation of the Orchard Mesa System, and from recent work

on orchards, it can be shown that irrigation water demand can
J
be cut by at least 50% if pressurized reservoir storage can be

built into the project.
The Bureau has indicated that they would probably recommend

some minimal type rehabilitation as far as the Orchard Mesa

System was concerned. However, because all the water has to

be pumped from the river it would be more economical to provide

pressurized storage.

There are many benefits to be obtained from such a system.

Not the least of which is maximum salinity reduction.
